Modified RMR Rock Mass Classification System for Preliminary Selection of Potential Sites of High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Engineering

چکیده

This paper proposed a modified Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system, the RMRHLW for evaluating rock quality of High-level Radioactive Waste (HLW) geological disposal engineering. Some salient factors, including weakening groundwater and temperature on uniaxial compressive strength, continuity index values, geostress, permeability, chemical properties, were further incorporated based widely used RMR system. The system was then verified by case study selection nine candidate sites HLW engineering in China. results indicated that Xinchang site best ranked as most appropriate site, while Jiujing worst. Compared with traditional can consider crucial factors related to long-term safety better reflect differences between potential sites. It facilitate engineers preliminarily evaluate

Disposal of low-level radioactive waste.

The Act encouraged states to form regional compacts for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW). The Act contained both positive and negative incentives. The positive incentive was a provision that allowed compacts to restrict access to their regional LLRW disposal facility to member states beginning in 1993, thus limiting the amount of waste disposed of in any state hosting a region...

Disposal of Radioactive Waste

Perhaps the most important single problem arising from the increasing use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes is how to dispose of the growing amounts of radioactive waste. Many of its complex aspects were discussed at the scientific conference on the disposal of radioactive waste held by IAEA in Monaco from 16 to 21 November 1959. The conference was organized jointly with UNESCO, with the c...

Site selection and regulatory basis for the Yucca Mountain disposal system for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste

This paper summarizes the historical events from the identification of the Yucca Mountain site in southern Nevada in 1978 to its selection by the US Congress as the sole site to characterize for a repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in 1987. Coincident with this selection process and later site characterization, the US spent from 1977 to 2009 establishing long-ter...

Microbial activity of trench leachates from shallow-land, low-level radioactive waste disposal sites.

Trench leachate samples collected anoxically from shallow-land, low-level radioactive waste disposal sites were analyzed for total aerobic and anaerobic populations, sulfate reducers, denitrifiers, and methanogens. Among the several aerobic and anaerobic bacteria isolated, only Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Citrobacter sp., and Clostridium sp. were identified. Mixed bacterial cultures isolated...

The Construction and Operation of Geological Disposal Facilities for High-level Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel

A key challenge over the next decade for some national programmes and an important learning opportunity for many others will be the construction and operation of the first deep geological repositories for High Level Waste (HLW) and Spent Fuel (SF). As the orientation of work on disposal shifts from mainly research, development and demonstration to industrial implementation, waste management age...
